Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) responded today to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner: “On issue after issue, President Obama has exhibited an utter contempt for Congress and our constitutional democracy.  He was not elected to rule by executive fiat – snubbing the checks and balances put in place by our Founding Fathers.  He was elected to preserve the security and freedom of all Americans. His empty rhetoric will not impede our push for legitimate reforms.

“President Obama is responsible for the ongoing illegal overreach by the NSA that violates the civil liberties of innocent Americans. He is also largely at fault for the partisan divide plaguing Washington. But despite this divisiveness, the Leahy-Sensenbrenner USA FREEDOM Act has 124 cosponsors in the House of Representatives and 19 in the Senate – a bipartisan and eclectic mix of folks covering the political spectrum. If the President wants to achieve genuine reform, he should work with Republicans and Democrats in Congress to rein in the NSA and restore trust in our intelligence community.

“Similarly on climate change, we will not allow the President to unilaterally impose economy-crushing regulations on businesses.  Instead, he should encourage the State Department to approve the Keystone XL pipeline – creating jobs and making America more energy independent.

“President Obama created a healthcare disaster by pushing a partisan bill with no Republican support. We knew Obamacare would be a train wreck. Those who didn’t, certainly realize it now.  Rather than making a bad situation worse, he should work with Congress on a bipartisan solution before premiums skyrocket, the quality of care plummets and the tax liabilities of American families and businesses increase.

“At tonight’s State of the Union, the President gave an ultimatum: My way or the highway.  I choose the highway.”
