Sensenbrenner, Kohl, and Feingold,
Washington, DC -- Representative F. JAMES SENSENBRENNER, JR. (R-Menomonee Falls) today issued the following statement regarding the names submitted to President Bush for the U.S. Attorney and federal judgeship positions available in Wisconsin (see list after the statement):
"Today, Senators Kohl, Feingold, and I, submitted a partial list to President Bush of the candidates selected by the Wisconsin Federal Nominating Commission for the U.S. Attorney position in the Eastern District, the Western District, and the federal judgeship in Green Bay. The bipartisan Commission is comprised of people appointed by Senators Kohl, Feingold, and me.
"Unfortunately, Senators Kohl and Feingold chose not to accept the full slate of candidates presented by the Commission. They chose to eliminate the names of Justice Patrick Crooks of Madison, and Judge Elsa Lamelas of Shorewood, from consideration for the federal judgeship. They also removed Joseph F. Paulus of Oshkosh for consideration for the U.S. Attorney position in both the Eastern and Western District.
"Although I believe everyone on the list sent to President Bush to be good candidates who are qualified for their respective positions, the Senators' actions have resulted in a pared down list. This has the effect of reducing the President's options for filling these positions -- even though these appointments are to be filled by President Bush and not by Senators Kohl, Feingold, or myself.
"I am pleased with the results of the Commission, and I support and commend the members of the Commission for their hard work and commitment to our state. Once the President makes his decisions, I hope the process moves swiftly so that the selected candidates can get to work."
