Brookfield, WI, Jun 15, 2012 -

Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) issued this statement in response to President Obama’s announcement that his Department of Homeland Security will cease deporting illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, and instead begin giving them work permits.

“Today President Obama made a political calculation. In an effort to appeal to some voters, he issued a new immigration policy that is a radical departure from the laws we have on the books. The Campaigner in Chief again fundamentally shirked his duty as President.

“We are a nation of laws. It is Congress’ duty to make the laws, and the Executive’s to enforce them. The President is blatantly ignoring the system of checks and balances written into our constitution.”

“The President’s amnesty will have lasting effects. It is offensive to the millions of Americans still out of work. It rewards law-breaking. And it’s deeply unfair to those who came to this country legally.”

In 2005, when Sensenbrenner was Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, he authored legislation that would have reformed our immigration system to address many of the challenges we still face today. The House passed his legislation but the Senate did not act on it.
