Washington, Jun 7, 2012 - Congressmen Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Tom Petri (R-WI) sent a letter signed by 31 Representatives to the transportation conference committee. In the letter, Members argue that the conference committee should include in the final bill a provision to prohibit the DOT from funding motorcycle-only checkpoints (MOCs).

“MOCs are an intrusive and unnecessary governmental overreach,” Sensenbrenner said. “I hope the conference committee will take notice of this bipartisan support for rejecting these checkpoints. Instead, we urge the committee to ensure we use taxpayer dollars efficiently and focus on crash prevention, rider education, and training and proper licensing.”

"Motorcycle riders understandably consider motorcycle-only checkpoints to be discriminatory and a form of harassment," said Petri.  "I don't see how the checkpoints will really enhance safety, and we have better things to do with the taxpayers' money.  I don't see any reason for the federal government to get involved in this."
