Invitation to Summer Town Halls and Office Hours
Jun 1, 2012 -
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. Even as Wisconsin is gearing up for the season of Brewers games, barbeques, and county fairs and festivals, many people will still have a lot on their minds. There are still too many Americans out of work, energy prices are unstable, and our national debt is too high.
I hold regular Town Hall and Office Hour meetings to make sure I continue to hear from constituents on issues like these that impact Wisconsin. I’d like to invite you to join me at one of my upcoming summer meetings.
I can’t count the number of times I have heard from people at a Town Hall about the damaging effect of ethanol on their engines; or listened to someone describe the frustrating wave of government regulations coming out of Washington; or discussed the importance of the Keystone pipeline.
This summer, it is critical we continue to move forward with solutions to help get government out of the way and get our economy back on track. In the past year, the House passed over 30 bills to help promote job creation, but we have more work to do.
For example, while the House has already voted to repeal Obamacare in its entirety, we are also working to repeal some of its most harmful job-killing taxes and mandates from ever going into effect. This June, we will repeal a tax on medical devices, which was included to pay for the health care law. According to industry experts the tax would kill as many as 43,000 American jobs, send investment overseas, and discourage the development of more life-saving medical innovations.
Additionally, this June, the House will consider proposals to promote the development of America’s energy resources. Gas prices are still too high, and the cost is hurting consumers and businesses. The House proposals will help to open up federal lands and move our country closer to energy security. We will also work to reform and streamline the process to ensure we are responsibly and efficiently developing our natural resources.
I am looking forward to speaking with constituents this summer about the House’s work and how we can address our nation’s most critical challenges.
Town Halls and Office Hours are also a chance for me to help constituents resolve any issues with federal agencies. In just the past few months, I was able to talk with people having trouble with Medicare and VA claims and shook the hands of applicants to our National Service Academies.
