Congressman Sensenbrenner questioned the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano during the House Judiciary Committee hearing, regarding whether she will allow a delay in implementation of REAL ID again.
“Secretary Napolitano evaded my question four times on whether DHS will delay implementation of REAL ID yet again,” Sensenbrenner said.
“The 9/11 Commission was firm in saying we need secure identification to reduce risk to the American public. In the Commission’s Tenth Anniversary Report Card, they reaffirmed the importance of implementing REAL ID. Eighteen 9/11 hijackers obtained ID’s and state-issued drivers licenses, and the decision to delay implementation requirements until 2013 allows continued vulnerability in the system. I am concerned that the Administration has not taken this recommendation seriously, and the DHS should move quickly to implement secure drivers licenses.”
