Please see the below statement from Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (WI-05) regarding the speech made by President Obama this evening.

“Shortly after President Obama was elected, Rahm Emanuel, his Chief of Staff said: “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”  Much to the detriment of our country, and the people of the Gulf Coast, the Obama Administration is following this philosophy with the BP oil spill.

“As the Gulf Coast people suffer from the horrible environmental disaster, President Obama should be focusing our efforts on how to cap the leak, not how to pass cap-and-tax legislation.  Times of disaster are not the time to advance a political agenda or point the finger of blame.

“We all understand that BP is at fault for the spill and must take financial responsibility.  However, the Obama Administration also has a responsibility to protect.  As President, he should be leading the effort to gather all the brainpower and resources from across the country to develop a solution, as well as determine how to best utilize the resources our foreign allies have offered us to aid in the spill’s cleanup.

“Our priority right now must be preventing more devastation to our environment and the residents of the Gulf Coast by plugging the leak.  To do that, we need a leader who is cooperating with BP and others to make that happen, not talking tough and spinning the crisis to help him in the polls.”
