America is currently faced with multiple threats from around the globe that endanger our national security, as well as the security of our regional partners. In the Middle East, the Islamic State advance has been slowed and reversed by an international coalition, including U.S. military advisors. I believe that the President must present a clear strategy to Congress on defeating the Islamic State. Previous American involvement in the Middle East has shown that a lack of American involvement in the wake of a conflict can create power vacuums that only lead to the rise of more dangerous foes. Given this, any plan the President presents for victory in the Middle East should also include a comprehensive blueprint to a more stable Middle East and wider geopolitical order.

While our country faces several threats abroad, the threat of violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism in our country is real, and we must work as a nation to combat this threat. Our nation has repeatedly seen the effects of radicalization in recent years, and it is imperative that Congress – along with the President – work together to develop and implement a sound strategy to prevent terrorism and punish its perpetrators.
