Bigger, But Not Better
Washington,

The health care overhaul bill is getting bigger. With the addition of Speaker Pelosi’s Manager’s Amendment, it’s now up to a whopping 2032 pages, and still growing, but it’s not getting any better!
If Nancy Pelosi’s health care overhaul bill passes, the results will likely make Cash for Clunkers look like a steal of a deal and FEMA look efficient. The dubbed “Party of No” KNOWS better, and is working overtime to ensure this doesn’t happen.
I’ve read through this bill. It’s a terrible piece of legislation. In the first 520 pages, there are already five huge reasons why every Wisconsinite should be alarmed about a government takeover of health care and be against H.R. 3962. From mandating individuals to purchase coverage through the federal government, to forcing taxpayers to fund abortions, to cutting Medicare Advantage, this is bad legislation that costs Wisconsinites and hurts Wisconsin. But, I’ll let you see those specifics for yourself below. There’s also a link to the entire bill on my website.
Reason #1 to Vote Against a Government Takeover
Page 94—Section 202(c) prohibits the sale of private individual health insurance policies, beginning in 2013, forcing individuals to purchase coverage through the federal government.
Reason #2 to Vote Against a Government Takeover
Page 109/110—Section 222(e) requires the use of federal dollars to fund abortions through the government-run health plan—and, if the Hyde Amendment were ever not renewed, would require the plan to fund elective abortions.
Reason #3 to Vote Against a Government Takeover
Page 111—Section 223 establishes a new board of federal bureaucrats (the “Health Benefits Advisory Committee”) to dictate the health plans that all individuals must purchase—and would likely require all Americans to subsidize and purchase plans that cover any abortion.
Reason #4 to Vote Against a Government Takeover
Page 225—Section 330 permits—but does not require—Members of Congress to enroll in government-run health care. SPECIAL NOTE: The language says that Members “may” enroll in the public option, but they are not required to enroll in the plan they are forcing on others. In contrast, the bill uses the word “shall” 3,425 times for everyone else.
Reason #5 to Vote Against a Government Takeover
Page 520—Section 1161 cuts more than $150 billion from Medicare Advantage plans, which will have a direct impact on Wisconsin’s 216,000 seniors who signed up for Medicare Advantage.
The bill continues to get worse as you turn the pages. And with the additional pages that will likely be added at the last moment on abortion and other hot button items, no one will really know what’s in the bill before it’s voted on. Despite Speaker Pelosi’s September 24th promise that she would “absolutely” put the final bill on the web for 72 hours before bringing it to a vote, she’s now changed her mind, and votes are expected shortly after numerous changes are made in regard to the rule (which moves the bill from committee to the floor).
Wisconsinites deserve better and I will be casting a resounding no vote on this bill.
